Kami Sutton, 27 years old
Kami Sutton is no stranger to a Children’s Hospital operating room. As a 2011 graduate of the University of Washington School Of Communications, the outgoing 25 year-old has endured 19 surgeries on her heart, the latest one in the summer of 2009 being a cardiac Catherization to measure the pressures in her heart to determine if she was getting closer to the need for a heart transplant. Kami was born with her heart on the right side of her body, she had no connection between her heart and lungs and the pumping chambers in her heart were reversed. Throughout the years, doctors at Children’s have performed innovative surgeries that have stabilized her condition. They have helped her to live a fairly normal life, though she tires easily and has little stamina. Her mother says that through the “technology of Children’s, they’ve been able to perform miracles with her. She’s here today because of that.” After the last surgery it was determined that it was time to put Kami on the list for a new heart and she has currently been on the waiting list for 4 years. While she continues her wait she continues her work as Patient Spokesperson for Seattle Children’s through the Team Seattle and SOVREN Guilds, finding a way to give back to the hospital. Kami has also started a career at the American Heart Association working in Advocacy as the Grassroots Coordinator. Kami is also a diehard auto racing fan who loves watching NASCAR, United Sportscar Racing and Formula 1 each weekend!
