Seattle University Students Dance for Charity…Mayor to Join Festivities
February 13, 2014
WHAT: Students will dust off their dancing shoes and throw on their favorite flair to dance the day and night away in Seattle University’s 7th annual dance marathon. The 16-hour event is a fundraiser for Seattle Children’s Hospital and features live musical performances (including local up-and-comers The Ramblin’ Years), food, games, a silent auction (VIP tickets to the Paramount, a year of free shows at Neumos, restaurant gift cards, etc.) and of course, the dance-a-thon.
SU’s event is the third largest fundraising dance marathon on the west coast and is run by the university’s largest student-driven philanthropy group. Hundreds of dancers are currently registered to participate. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray is expected to make a late afternoon appearance, though it’s still unknown whether he’ll be in his dancing shoes.
The group’s mission statement is to, "imagine a world of wellness, inspire a community of hope, and impact children and families through Uncompensated Care at Seattle Children's Hospital. We believe that no family should feel alone in their fight against a pediatric illness, and no child should be kept from the medical care they need to live a fulfilled life because of money."
100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Seattle Children’s program. Before the dancing has even begun, students have already raised more than $30,000. The goal is to raise $50,000. Last year’s event raised an event record-high of more than $42,000. In just six years, the SUDM has raised nearly $130,000.
The public is welcome to cheer on the dancers.
